help with fraction word problem pls, I can't figure it out.

What you found was the ratio of men to women which is 1:19 or 1/19. But the question asks for the fraction of students who are men. There are 57+3=60 students (women plus men) so 3/60 are men and that reduces to 1/20, which should be the answer in the book.

ratio examples

Here is the example for ratios....   Example : Find the ratio between 5 dogs and 15 cats?   Solution:   Number of dogs = 5   Number of cats = 15   Ratio = 5/15 or 5 to 15 or 5: 15   = 1/3 or 1 to 3 or 1: 3.   Ratios are basically mathematical fractions expressed differently. In math, ratios express the volume of quantities relative to each other. Specifically, the ratio of two quantities indicates how many times the first quantity is contained in the second and may be expressed algebraically as their quotient.   There are several methods which helps how to solve ratios and it will be more easy when you start practicing on the topic.

whitch ratio is greater

Let's say there are S students. Let C be the number of students having a computer. Those not having a computer will be S-C. So the ratio is C/S:(S-C)/S=C:(S-C). If P is the number of students with a cellphone, then S-P is the number without and the ratio is, similarly, P:(S-P). To compare the two ratios we need actual figures. Then we compare ratios as we would fractions: C/(S-C)-P/(S-P)=(CS-CP-PS+CP)/((S-C)(S-P))=S(C-P)/((S-C)(S-P)). If this expression is positive C>P and the computer ratio is higher, otherwise the phone ratio is higher. Example: Let S=100, C=85 and P=95. The comparison expression is 100*(-10)/75=-40/3. The ratios are 85:15=17:3 and 95:5=19:1. 17/3-19=-40/3. In this example the phone ratio is higher.

Which is the correct yield calculation... 0.75/0.95 or 0.75*0.05+0.75?

If by yield is meant the amount of interest returned plus the amount invested, then the second expression is the correct one. In the expression 0.05 looks like a rate of 5% applied to an amount 0.75. The interest is 0.05*0.75=0.0375. When this is added to the original amount 0.75 we get 0.7875. Other types of yield are given by the expression 100*(actual yield)/(expected yield) which is a percentage. Neither expression looks like this. It should be noted that 0.75/0.95=0.75/(1-0.05) which is approximately equal to 0.75(1+0.05)=0.05*0.75+0.75.

Find m if x – 3 and x + 2 are factors of x3 + m2x2 – 11x – 15m

36r4 + 36r3 + 3r2) / 9r3  this is normally written as (36r^4 + 36r^3 + 3r^2) / (9r^3)  this is equivalent to (36r^4 / 9r^3) + (36r^3 / 9r^3) + (3r^2 / 9r^3)  the rule for exponent arithmetic to apply is that x^a/x^b = x^(a-b).  so, basically, if the base is the same, then you subtract the exponent in the denominator from the exponent in the numerator and put the result in the numerator.  the other rule for exponent arithmetic to apply is that x^-a = 1/x^a.  you take the reciprocal and change the sign of the exponent.  x^-a = 1/x^a  x^a = 1/x^-a  normally you want to simplify by making all the exponents positive, so if you have x^-a, then show it as 1/x^a, and if you have 1/x^-a, then show it as x^a.  looking at each of the parts of (36r^4 / 9r^3) + (36r^3 / 9r^3) + (3r^2 / 9r^3) individually, you get:  36r^4 / 9r^3 becomes 36/9 * r^4/r^3 which becomes 4 * r^(4-1) which becomes 4r^1 which becomes 4r.  36r^3 / 9r^3 becomes 36/9 * r^3/r^3 which becomes 4 * r^(3-3) which becomes 4 * r^0 which becomes 4 * 1 which becomes 4.  3r^2/9r^3 becomes 3/9 * r^2/r^3 which becomes 1/3 * r^(2-3) which becomes 1/3 * r^-1 which becomes 1/3 * 1/r^1 which becomes 1/3 * 1/r which becomes 1/(3r)  your simplified expression becomes 4r + 4 + 1/(3r)  this should be your solution, but if you wanted to put everything under the same denominator, then you would get:  4r + 4 + 1/(3r) becomes (4r*3r + 4*3r + 1) / (3r)  simplify this to get:  (12r^2 + 12r + 1) / (3r)  that should be your simplified expression.  if we did this correctly, your original expression and your simplified expression should give you the same answer if you replace r with a random value.  for example, assume r = 7  your original expression of (36r^4 + 36r^3 + 3r^2) / (9r^3) becomes equal to 32.04761905  your simplified expression of (12r^2 + 12r + 1) / (3r) becomes equal to 32.04761905  since they both provide the same answer, they're equivalent and you can reasonable conclude that you simplified correctly.  if your stated solution is not this, then let me know what it is and i'll come up with a reason why it should be that and not what i just told you.  the difference, if any, is usually in what the definition of simplified is.

cement is mixed with sand in the ratio 1:3 to make a building mixture  (1) if a bag of cement weighs 50kg, how much kg of sand should be added? Ratio is 1:3 so multiply by 3. 50 * 3 = 150 kg  (2) how many bags of cement should be mixed with 2250kg of sand? divide by 3. 2250/3 = 750 kg  (3) 30 bags of cement are mixed with 4500kg of sand, show the means of calculations that the ratio is correct divide 4500 by 3 4500/3 = 1500 kg of cement
