(x^2-1)y"+3xy'+xy=0 power series solution

(x^2-1)y"+3xy'+xy=0 power series solution Let y = Sigma[n=0...infty] a_n.x^n,   y' = Sigma[n=1...infty] n.a_n.x^(n-1),    y'' = Sigma[n=2...infty] n(n-1).a_n.x^(n-2) Substituting for y, y' and y'' into the DE, Sigma[n=2...infty] n(n-1).a_n.x^n - Sigma[n=2...infty] n(n-1).a_n.x^(n-2) + Sigma[n=1...infty] 3n.a_n.x^n  + Sigma[n=0...infty] a_n.x^(n+1) = 0 Modifying the indices such that all the Sigmas have x to the same power, Sigma[n=2...infty] n(n-1).a_n.x^n - Sigma[k=0...infty] (k+2)(k+1).a_(k+2).x^k + Sigma[n=1...infty] 3n.a_n.x^n  + Sigma[k=1...infty] a_(k-1).x^k = 0 expand those summations for k/n = 0 and 1, Sigma[n=2...infty] {n(n-1)a_n - (n+2)(n+1)a_(n+2) + 3n.a_n + a_(n-1)}x^n - 2a_2 - 6a_3.x + 3a_1.x + a_0.x = 0 Sigma[n=2...infty] {(n^2-n+3n)a_n - (n+2)(n+1)a_(n+2) + a_(n-1)}x^n - 2a_2 + (a_0 + 3a_1 - 6a_3)x = 0 Equating the coefficients of x to zero, a2 = 0,   a_0 + 3a_1 - 6a_3 = 0,   -> a_3 = (1/6)(a_0 + 3a_1) (n+2)(n+1)a_(n+2) = n(n+2)a_n + a_(n-1),   n = 2,3,4,... n=2,  12a_4 = 8a_2 + a_1 = a_1            ->      a_4 = (1/12)a_1 n=3,   20a_5 = 15a_3 + a_2 = 15a_3     ->      a_5 = (3/4)a_3 = (1/8)(a_0 + 3a_1) The general series solution is then: y(x) = a_0 + a_1.x + a_2.x^2 + a_3.x^3 + a_4.x^4 + a_5.x^5 + O(x^6) y(x) = a_0 + a_1.x + (1/6)(a_0 + 3a_1).x^3 + (1/12)a_1.x^4 + (1/8)(a_0 + 3a_1).x^5 + O(x^6)

Let n be the number of calculators so each one cost 240/n. She sold n-1 calculators for $300 so each calculator was sold for 300/(n-1). The profit=5=300/(n-1)-240/n. Multiply both sides of the equation by n(n-1): 5n(n-1)=300n-240n+240. So 5n^2-5n=60n+240. This is a quadratic equation: 5n^2-65n-240=0.  Divide through by 5: n^2-13n-48=0; (n-16)(n+3)=0. So n=16, because n=-3 is not applicable in this case. Let's see if 16 fits the facts. Each calculator costs 240/16=$15. She sold 15 for $300, making them $20 each. So she made a profit of 20-15=$5 on each calculator. That fits!

How do I solve 8750^1596 on a calculator without getting an overflow error message

How do I solve 8750^1596 on a calculator without getting an overflow error message Your calculation would result in a value of: 2.785175868 * 10^(6291) Most calculator would probably only reach a max exponent of 10^100, certainly nowhere near 10^(6291) Your calculator would always return an error.   One way of doing it would be to do it in stages. The max exponent on your calculator is probably going to be 100 (i.e. 99) By experiment, we find that 8750^25 = 3.549779 * 10^98 Now 63*25 = 1575 So, (8750^25)^63 = 8750^(25*63) = 8750^(1575) Then 8750^(1575) = (3.549779 * 10^98)^63  8750^(1575) = (3.549779^63) * 10^(98*63) 8750^(1575) = (4.599206*10^34) * 10^(98*63) 8750^(1575) = (4.599206*10^34) * 10^(6174) 8750^(1575) = 4.599206*10^(6208) Also, 8750^21 = 6.055766 * 10^82 Then, 8750^(1596) = 8750^(1575) * 8750^21 8750^(1596) = 4.599206*10^(6208) * 6.055766 * 10^82 8750^(1596) = 4.599206*6.055766 * 10^(6208) * 10^82 8750^(1596) = 27.851719 * 10^(6290) 8750^(1596) = 2.7851719 * 10^(6291) This is accurate to 4 dp with the first calculated value (using Maple) giving 8750^(1596) = 2.7852 * 10^(6291) to 4 dp
